They say we have three options when a big wave, real or metaphorical, is roaring our way:
1) Ride it and face the challenge with courage.
2) Run away, if we’re fast and clever enough to escape it.
3) Dive under the water and let it pass overhead.
We all like to think of ourselves as brave enough to ride every wave, tackling challenges head-on and conquering them, proving we’re true leaders.
But sometimes, the smartest move isn’t to ride or run: it’s to duck under and let the wave pass.
Indeed, not every challenge needs to be faced, and not every fight needs our participation. Knowing when to step back can be the truest mark of wisdom and strength.
Five Tips for When to Dive Under:
The Shadow Wave: When the challenge serves no real purpose but to inflate egos, let it pass. Your time is better spent elsewhere.
The Tsunami Trap: If the wave is too massive to handle and risks devastating consequences, retreat and survive to fight another day.
The Ripple Effect: When tackling the challenge would cause bigger problems or unintended harm, let it settle and choose restraint.
The Uninvited Wave: If the challenge isn’t yours to own, avoid stepping into a fight that isn’t your responsibility.
The Energy Equation: When the cost of engagement outweighs the potential reward, conserve your resources for more critical battles.
Instead of trying to tackle everything head-on, be smart and decide when it’s best to ride a big wave, run away, or dive under. Sometimes, the bravest thing you can do is to take a deep breath and let it pass 😉 .
