It is better to lose with style and integrity, having truly deserved it, than to win without earning it. We’ve all experienced moments when we prepared diligently, worked hard for weeks or months, executed with excellence, did everything right, and still couldn’t achieve a critical mission or target. Meanwhile, others, who did the same or even less, succeeded. This can happen in sports, business, or personal life.
Consider yesterday evening when the German National soccer team lost to Spain 1-2 in a dramatic, high-quality match. Despite Germany looking more likely to score a winner in overtime, Spain’s Merino headed home an exquisite cross with just seconds remaining, breaking Germany’s soccer hearts. Although Germany played exceptionally well, fought as a united team, were stronger in most aspects during the match, had better chances, they lost.
For individuals, teams, or entire organizations, such situations can be frustrating and demotivating, even breaking one’s spirit. However, these moments can also be great lessons and opportunities for future growth and success if managed well. It can even be the moment when future greatness and legends are forged.
Here are five strategies to turn a perceived defeat into a mid- or long-term victory:
Take Over Ownership: Acknowledge that despite your hard work and efforts, the outcome didn’t meet your expectations. Own the results without making excuses.
Self-Critical Analysis: Reflect deeply and critically on what went wrong, identifying areas for genuine improvement and learning.
Cultivate a Growth Mindset: Embrace challenges and failures as opportunities to grow, focusing on continuous improvement and resilience.
Execute with Excellence: Strive to refine your skills and strategies, aiming for superior execution in every future endeavor.
Appreciate and Celebrate: Recognize and celebrate your efforts and those of others, taking pride in the hard work and dedication shown, regardless of the outcome.
True success is measured by the journey, not just the outcome. Or, in the words of Sir Winston Churchill, “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”
That´s why we are so proud of our German National soccer team. Well done guys!
